Description
Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz (1648-1695) was Latin America’s first great poet and the New World’s first feminist. At age sixteen, brilliantly self-educated, she was taken into the court of the viceroy of New Spain as lady-in-waiting to the vicereine. At age 20 she entered a convent where she was forbidden to write. She died in the convent during an epidemic of the plague.
