QueenLili‘uokalani • 1838–1919

Queen Lili‘uokalani reigned from 1891 to 1893 as the last monarch of the

Kingdom of Hawai‘i. She succeeded her brother King David Kalākaua to the

throne but her reign was cut short in a bloodless coup led by American and

European businessmen who held prominent positions in Hawai‘i. Despite

her overthrow and the occupation of Hawai‘i, the Queen lived until 1917

dying in Honolulu at the age of 79. To this day, Queen Lili‘uokalani is revered

as an icon of the Hawaiian Kingdom, of Hawaiian culture and language, and

of Hawaiian music.
