Description
The Hebrew word Hanukkah means “dedication” and refers to the joyous eight-day celebration through which Jews commemorate the victory of the Maccabees over the armies of Syria in 165 BCE and the subsequent liberation and “re-dedication” of the Temple of Jerusalem. On every night of Hanukkah, two berochot (“blessings”) are chanted or recited. The first is a blessing over the candles and the second berochot expresses thanks for the miracle of deliverance. The third berochot is chanted only on the first night. This is the Sheheheyanu prayer, pronounced by Jews on all happy occasions.
