Description

The exact dates of Kalidasa are disputed; they range from the first century BC to the fifth century AD. He is generally regarded as India’s finest Sanskrit poet and dramatist, and is best known for his depictions of nature and sensitive insights into romance and beauty. Banabhatta, a 7th century port, said that, “No one fails to feel delight when Kalidasa’s verses are recited; they are sweet and dense, like clusters of buds.”

Three of his plays–Abhijnaanashakuntalaa (“The Recognition of Shakuntala”), Vikramorvashi (“Urvashii Won by Valor”), andMalavikagnimitra (“Malavikaa and Agnimitra”)–are among the six extant works regarded as genuine; the other three are the epic poems Raghuvamsha (“Dynasty of Raghu”), Kumarasambhava (“Birth of the War God”), and the lyric poem Meghaduta (“Cloud Messenger”). Shakuntalaa, his best known work, was the first to be translated into English. A German translation, based on the English version, appeared in 1791. Goethe enthusiastically remarked, “If you want heaven and earth contained in one name, I say Shakuntala and all is spoken.”
