Description

Poili Santa is an ovi, a type of folksong from the Konkan region on the west coast of India and is sung in Konkani, the language of the region.  Konkani is also the principal language of the region’s dominant state, Goa, the former Portuguese colony which has a large number of Catholics.  An ovi is a nuptial song, and Poili Santa probably had its origin in the earlier traditional ceremonies that precede a wedding, such as the ceremonial bathing of the bride and the procession from the bride’s home to the place of the wedding.
