Description

This octavo contains two songs:

Winter:  These two rugged "Winter" stanzas follow the two stanzas of "Spring" at the end of the final act of Love's Labor's Lost (1598).

Song:  This is Amiens' song, from Act III, Scene VII of As You Like It.  Songs in praide of the holly, the emblem of mirth and winter festivities, were quite popular in England at the end of the Middle Ages.  In this song, Shakespeare combines the customary jollity of the refrain with the more cynical theme of the verse: "Winter, with all its harshness, is more tolerable than the ingratitude and insincerity of man."
