Description

The text is Peg Lauber’s poem “A Wish” in its entirety. It is a poem rich in both specific music references (“Gregorian chants,” “Gabrielli’s masses,” “counter-tenor”) and in images that are less explicitly musical, but still rich in word painting possibilities (“flowering plum trees,” “marble echo.”) Munn describes her aim of this piece was “to create meaningful musical links between the explicit and the subtle word painting possibilities. Thus, for instance, ‘Gregorian chant,’ ‘flowering plum trees’ and ‘doing only one thing yet many’ are musically linked; and ‘marble echo’ and ‘doing only one thing’ are also linked.” In this way, connections that are not so obvious on the surface are explored and experienced through Munn’s composition. To Be Like Music was commissioned by the Nova Singers, Laura Lane, conductor.
