Description
Ask the Watchman is based on two spirituals from the Sea Islands of South Carolina and Georgia, Ask the Watchman How Long and Yonduh Come Day, which are contextually related. Both songs were sung on the eves of Christmas and the New Year during Watch Night Meetings, which would begin at midnight and end after dawn.
