The rumba has three variants: the columbia (fast), the yambu (slow), and the guaguanco (moderato).
El Guayaboso is a choral guaguanco. This was first composed in the 1960s for a youth chorus. In the 1980s, the composer conceived of a version for mixed chorus in which the voices were to sing the percussion parts. An excellent recording of this piece by the Cuban choral ensemble Exaudi is found on CD-04.
