Description
Ndiga Manyien is a song from the Luo people of Kenya that praises a girl who is riding a bicycle.
Throughout history, women in various civilizations have pursued equality to enhance their contributions
to society and to participate in roles traditionally dominated by men. These efforts gained momentum
in the modern era, bolstered by a cadre of influential women, including feminist critics such as Juliet
Dusinberre and Lisa Jardine in the 1970s and 1980s, who challenged conventional interpretations of
gender roles. Among the Luo people of Kenya, for example, bicycle ownership and use were primarily
reserved for boys and men until the late 20th century. As girls and women from the Luo communitypursued greater gender equality, they began purchasing, owning, and riding bicycles. In response, boys
and men would gather to cheer them on. Given the cultural novelty of the initiative, musicians composed
songs that celebrated the women’s courage in embracing both bicycle ownership and riding.
