Of the 445 motets composed by Jacob Handl (Jacobus Gallus) (1550-1591), Ascendit Deus is one of the thirty five pieces whose range matches the range of the male chorus. By the mid to late 16th century, in motets of this genre, the tactus is normally not alla breve but alla semibreve (a whole note in the original notation.) Thus, in this edition, where the note values have been halved, the tempo will enliven the spirit behind Handl's setting.
