Description
Timing: 2:22 – 4:52
This piece is arranged to be performed with optional participation by audiences and congregations.
As stated by Donald Patriquin in his notes: “It may be performed as a solo, as a unison choir, SAT or SATB. The tenor line may be sung by altos. Octaves may be adjusted to better fit in vocal ranges, such as if the bass part is assigned to altos. It may be accompanied by piano, organ, keyboard, or guitar–singularly or in combination. If no instruments are available, this piece can be sung a cappella.”
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow;
I am the diamond glints on the snow.
I am the sunlight on the ripened grain;
I am the gentle Autumn’s rain.
When you awaken in the morning hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not here; I did not die.
Here is a recording by the McGill Choral Society. This version is slightly different from the finished octavo:
