Lay a garland on her hearse of dismal yew; Maidens, willow branches wear; say she died true.

Robert Lucas Pearsall (1795-1856) composed Lay a Garland in 1840 for SSAATTBB choir. Imitative polyphony and moments of antiphony hearken back to the style of a Renaissance madrigal. He applied new lyrics (Tu es Petrus) in 1854, though the original secular text setting remains popular. These words come from Act II, Scene 1 of Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher’s play The Maid’s Tragedy. Pearsall adapted the poetry from rst person to third person. In the play, Aspatia sings these lyrics when her betrothed is coerced into marrying the king’s mistress. This arrangement could be conceived spatially as TTTTBBBB or separate antiphonal choirs (TTBB/ TTBB).
