Benedict (originally Baruch) de Spinoza was a Jewish philosopher of Hispanic origin, who lived in the Dutch republic from 1632 to 1677.  Excommunicated from the synagogue as a young man because he rejected orthodox Judaism, he was an early advocate of freedom of thought and expression, and a critical approach to traditional religion.
