To accommodate the influx of Jewish immigrants returning to their homeland, new towns were constructed throughout Israel. In 1955 the town of Dimonah was created in the Negev wilderness. Chayim Shalmoni's poem reflects the exotic appeal which the North African residents of Dimonah held for northern European immigrants.
