Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) composed this piece shortly after his return from London while serving as Capellmeister for Prince Esterhazy at Eisenstadt.  This work is the first section of the "Gloria" from the Missa Sancti Bernardi de Offida of 1796, one of the "Hermenegild" masses composed to celebrate the name day of Princess Marie Hermengild.
