Beira Mar (1953) is one of Esther Scliar's (1926-1978) earliest choral works and is one of the few that show a more evident influence of the African-Brazilian folk culture.  It is still unclear if the composer used any melodic motive, rhythmic element, or textual passage from the macumba ritual.  However, the subtitle "sob um ponto de macumba" (based on a macumba motive) appears in her autograph manuscript.
